Urunga Sail Training Club News - 27th March Fol Urunga Sail Training Club News - 27th March

Following a soggy start to the New Year, The Urunga Sail Training Club (USTC) was able to get its first Start Sailing 1 & 2 small boat sailing course for 2025 off to a pretty good start but, unusually, with only a handful of new students. This course was brought to an abrupt halt with the arrival of ‘Alfred’, it’s torrential rain and flooding, with the Bellinger and Kalang rivers flushing out floodwaters and debris out to sea, the USTC finally got back onto the river to finish up the last 2 weeks of the current sailing course.
Although it was somewhat overcast with light winds and a slightly turbid low tide on Saturday morning, the USTC was able to give “Kitty Kat”, a fire engine red Pacer its first spin on the river with the some of the new students under the guidance of the team of sailing instructors. Like many of the USTC’s training boats, this beautiful timber Pacer was recently and generously donated to the club by Rick Sutherland of Sawtell.
Derek Ridgley, the Principal of the Sailing School said “Every year, our boats and our OH&S documentation are vigorously assessed by Australian Sailing (AS) prior to our reaccreditation as an Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Training Centre. This accreditation process helps us continue to be up to date on the latest safety procedures and training methods to run our Sailing days and Courses 3 times a year, ensuring that they are safe and enjoyable for everyone. We also now have a great team of Accredited Instructors with varying ranges of experience and Junior trainee instructors who are mostly past students that want to further their involvement in teaching sailing to the Community.”
The new Pacer, Kitty Kat, will be used by beginners but also has spinnaker rigging that can be for used by more advanced sailors.
Registrations for the next course on May 3 (and in October) are now open. www.sailurunga.org.au #sail #sailing #australiansailing #urunga #bellingen #nambuccaheads #macksville #coffscoast #kempsey #learntosail #bellingerriver #kalangriver
